Today, lets walk into the journey of science with Paul Feng, the Pegasus chemistry & biology teacher

Paul has the master's degree in aviation, aerospace and navigation medicine of Nantong University. As a science and engineering teacher with both bachelor's degree and master's degree in chemistry and biology, he has his own profound understanding of science knowledge and interdisciplinary teaching.

What do you think is the difference between chemistry and other disciplines? Can you tell us more about the significance of experiment to chemistry?


Chemistry is a persistent discipline, which requires a strong spirit of exploration. In my class, no one can escape the "torture" of the experiment. From the preparation of the experimental equipment to the cleaning up of the final stage, every student must participate in it personally.


This is also the difference between foreign education, AP courses and exam-oriented education. Science is not a subject that can be opportunistic. We see that the conclusions drawn in textbooks often go through thousands of experiments, and every detail of them cannot be listed in the book. Only by experimenting and groping again and again can students understand the key.


Through repeated experiments and repeated failures, students will build up the internal feeling and intuition of the experiment, so that even if he has never been exposed to a certain experiment, he can find his own answer from the unity of science and achieve better results in the AP exam.




It is said that science experiments are uncontrollable. Are you worried that this process will affect the confidence of students?


It should be said that both successful and failed experiments have their meanings. For scientific experiments, details are very important. Establishing standardized steps and understanding of experimental materials in repeated experiments is a more profound significance in our learning process.


In the short run, it may be the failure of this experiment, but in the long run, the unremitting spirit of scientific exploration and the normative awareness of the continuous optimization of experimental steps established in the process of failure will accompany the children's study and career and help them go further.


And in the process of teaching, I will observe the state between students and groups at any time. If there is a need for encouragement and coordination, I will also intervene at any time. With the teacher's objective encouragement and company, students can find the joy of learning and success in scientific experiments in time, and our education is half successful.




For your students, what makes you proud and can you share with us?


Science is full of fun, and sometimes I will explore the fun with students as well. For example, there was a lack of activated carbon in one experiment, and we didn't even need to report it to the school. The children proposed to prepare activated carbon together with me. Finally, our material preparation and experiment were very successful.
