【Pegasus News】AMC is Recruiting Participants!
Release Time:2016-11-28 11:14
The MAA’s American Mathematics Competitions (MAA AMC) are designed to engage students and teachers in effective mathematical problem solving that is consistent with curricular goals and to prepare students for future mathematical success.
In 1950, the first Mathematical Contest, sponsored by the New York Metropolitan Section of the Mathematics Association of America (MAA), took place. It was given in approximately 200 schools to around 6,000 students in the New York area only. Today the competition has grown to over 350,000 students participating annually, in over 6,000 schools.
The American Mathematics Competitions are a series of examinations and curriculum materials that build problem solving skills and mathematical knowledge in middle and high school students.
From 2006, the China commission of AMC has started to administer these contests. For Chinese participants, it is even more challenging, since they need to demonstrate their math ability as well as their English language proficiency. It is also beneficial for students, since they gain the opportunity to learn and achieve through competition with students in their school and around the world. For award winners, it will add more weight to their college applications and resumes.
The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are 25-question, 75-minute multiple choice examinations in secondary mathematics containing problems which can be understood and solved with pre-calculus concepts. High scores on the AMC 10 or 12 can qualify the participant for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME).
Who can participate in the AMC contests?
Any students in any registered school who meets the respective age/grade restrictions for the AMC 10 and AMC 12 may take the respective contests. Students may take the AIME after qualification by being in the top 2.5% of scores on the AMC 10 and the top 5% of scores on the AMC 12. The only requirement for participation in the AMC 10 and AMC 12 is registration by the participating school.
